ECHO Project Director
Peabody Essex Museum

The ECHO Project Director at
the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA will lead a unique and well-recognized national program in Native American education and culture.



ECHO (Education through Cultural and Historical Organizations) is an educational and cultural enrichment initiative serving hundreds of thousands of children and adult learners in Massachusetts and the U.S. with a special focus on educational exchange related to Native American art and culture. PEM seeks an individual with highly developed interpersonal and leadership skills, a flexible "can do" entrepreneurial attitude, and a long engagement with Native communities and issues in Native education.

Job Responsibilities

<div align="left">



* Oversee all aspects of PEM's ECHO project, from developing cross-cultural educational programming, to acting as project manager for initiatives involving staff across the Museum and the ECHO partnership, to providing detailed operational and financial oversight to budgets and activities

* Serve as PEM's point person and a key representative to the 6-institution collaborative of Native/non-Native educational institutions that comprise the ECHO partnership and work with partners to develop, evaluate and implement collaborative projects

* Provide strategic direction and oversight for ECHO internship programs at PEM

* Supervise and mentor ECHO staff
* Guide educational content for Web and outreach projects
* Attend and help guide 3-4 ECHO partner meetings per year held in various US locations


Job Requirements

<div align="left">

* 5+ years of work experience in positions involving significant leadership within Native educational, Native museum, or Native community settings

* Bachelor's degree.  Desired: An M.A., Ph.D., Ed.D. or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in fields relating to Native/non-Native cross-cultural education and/or museum program development

* National credibility in Native Education professional and cultural circles

* Sensitivity and openness to wide range of cultural traditions of Native communities nationally

* Skill in getting results through effective management of diverse people and processes, and within complex collaborations

* Ability to create, implement, and manage budgets and a knowledge of basic finance


About the ECHO Program

ECHO is an educational and cultural enrichment initiative serving hundreds of thousands of children and adult learners in Massachusetts and the U.S. with a special focus on educational exchange related to Native American art and culture.  A wide range of programmatic initiatives are operated through ECHO, including cultural exchanges, collections sharing, curriculum development, teacher training, online and distance learning programs, exhibitions, performances, internships for high school and college-age youth, and a new residential internship program for Native American graduate students and emerging museum professionals.

ECHO was established by Congress as part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and is supported by an annual grant of approximately $8.5 million, $1.5 million of which comes to PEM. ECHO brings to culturally diverse audiences many innovative programs, produced both by PEM on its own and collaboratively by six partner cultural institutions located in Alaska, Hawai`i, Mississippi, and Massachusetts.
