Proposed Doctor of Education (Ed.D) Degree With a major in Teaching and
Learning
Focus: Global Indigenous Education, Culture & Language

The University of Minnesota Duluth is proposing an Indigenous Doctor of
Education (Ed.D) Program to begin in July of 2011. This hybrid program will
involve a blend of in-person and online work. Program content is inclusive
of Indigenous content, perspectives, and learning experiences. 

The Ed.D with a major in Teaching and Learning is an applied degree for the
professional faculty and administrators, and professionals in other human
service professions. The mission of the program is to produce scholarly
practitioners.

Program Overview

 

The Ed.D. with a major in Teaching and Learning is an applied

degree for the professional development of P-12, community

college and university faculty and administrators, professionals

in other human service professions such as coaching, athletic

training, criminal justice, social work, extension, community

agency administration, and university student personnel, as well

as business professionals involved in education and training

activities. The mission of the program is to produce scholarly

practitioners.

 

The goals of doctoral study in this program are to help students:

1. Acquire greater content knowledge in teaching and learning;

2. Develop abilities for research in the field of teaching and

learning;

3. Evolve a broadened professional background in areas related

to teaching and learning, such as systems and system

interactions, and methods for program improvement; and

4. Increase levels of cultural competence.

 

The Ed.D. degree consists of a minimum of 78 credits:

. Core required courses - 33 credits

. Supporting program - 15 credits (minimum)

. Project Credits (Educ 8888 - 24 credits) and Seminars (Educ

8020 - 6 credits)

 

A new cohort begins every other year (odd years).

Core courses are delivered using a hybrid model of face-to-face

and online delivery, depending on the nature of each course.

Class meetings will be scheduled on weekends.

 

Admission Standards

 

1. Master's degree, or a comparable foreign degree from a

recognized college or university, in education or a related field

2. Preferred minimum graduate GPA of 3.0

3. Submission of GRE scores (preferred minimum score of 500

(paper-based) or 213 (computer-based)

4. Minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based) or 213

(computer-based)

5. Three letters of recommendation

6. A minimum of three work samples

7. A personal statement of career objectives

8. Interview with admissions committee
