DIRECTOR DR. WILLIAM M. SCHOLL CENTER FOR AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE 

DEPARTMENT: Division of Research and Academic Programs 

SUMMARY: The Director of the Dr. William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture leads a research center designed  to promote research, scholarship, and teaching in American history and culture, with particular emphasis on areas relating to the collections of the Newberry Library.  The Director of the Scholl Center reports to the Vice President of Research and Academic Programs. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan, design, and seek funding for research and educational programs that promote research, scholarship, and teaching in American history and culture, with particular emphasis on areas relating to the collections of the Newberry  Library; supervise projects; supervise ongoing series of Center seminars; oversee budgets; manage a Center staff assembled on a per project basis to implement grant-funded programs; participate in the intellectual life of the Newberry; collaborate with other areas of the Library, including Development Office; collaborate with the Newberry's Director of Professional Development Programs for Teachers to help develop new projects and oversee the overall thematic content of the program; maintain close and effective relationships between the Center and scholarly communities locally, regionally, and nationally; conduct a  personal research program 
related to the Center's purposes and the Newberry’s collections; perform all other tasks or activities as necessary for the achievement of Center’s goals. 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Ph.D. in American history, literature, or related humanities discipline required along with a record of published scholarship; scholarly creativity; entrepreneurial inclinations with proven record of success; ability to collaborate with scholars, librarians, teachers, and other cultural institutions, and to represent the Library in various settings.  Research interests should relate to Newberry Library collections in American History and Culture, ranging from early American history into the early twentieth century, and encompassing, but not limited to, social, cultural, religious, and political history.  Teaching experience preferred.  Applicants also will  be evaluated on promise of future scholarly production and on breadth of scholarly interests. Finalists will be asked to submit a writing sample, preferably a book chapter or published article from a scholarly 
journal. 



SALARY: Comparable to assistant professor level 
BENEFITS: Generous insurance, time-off, and retirement packages. 

SCHEDULE: 35 hours/week, Monday through Friday, occasional evenings and weekends for special events.  Exempt position.
