I am pleased to inform you that the Salzburg Seminar American Studies
Association (SSASA) will be organizing two symposia in 2012.

The first is entitled " RESISTANCE AND READINESS: IMMIGRATION, NATIVISM, AND
THE CHALLENGE OF ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY IN THE US AND EUROPE TODAY"
- September 27-October 1, 2012. Briefly, the focus will be on contemporary
issues regarding migration (push and pull factors), dichotomies between
"natives" and "newcomers" and their significance in the US and various parts
of Europe, as well as identities and distinctions between "they" and "we" as
expressed in politics and in the art and literature of marginality. Please
see the attachment for a full description and list of speakers.

You can access the website for the symposium at

The second is entitled "SCREENING AMERICA: FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE 21st
CENTURY" - November 15-19, 2012. Briefly, the symposium will focus on
developments in American film and television since the turn of the
millennium and the way they reflect and communicate messages and images
about various aspects of life and culture. Sessions will also explore the
institutional effect of films and television on the arts, technology and
politics of the United States and ultimately their relation to the
perception of America abroad. Please see the attachment for a full
description. Information regarding speakers will follow at a later date.

Anyone interested in being a participant in either of these symposia should
fill out a registration form and return it by email attachment or fax, along
with the deposit as requested on the form. It would be a pleasure to welcome
back many Fellows from previous American Studies symposia, as well others
working or interested in areas related to the topic. Please let me know if
you have any questions.

Best wishes to all,
