Call for Papers :
« Performance Arts of First Nations Peoples in Central Canada »

This symposium, organised for the first and second of June 2012 by
the Laboratoire d’éthnoscénologie (EA 1573 “Scènes et saviors”) of the
Theatre Department of Université Paris 8, aims, first, to communicate the
results of two years of research undertaken in collaboration with the
Observatoire de nouvelles pratiques symboliques and the Aboriginal Studies
program of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa on
the “Performance Arts of First Nations Peoples in Central Canada”.

Second, the organising committee would like to expand the field of
research to include the entirety of First Nations Peoples of North America,
in particular those in the Mid-Western United States, knowing that the
results in Central Canada (Ontario, Quebec) showed various networks of
influence and borrowing amongst First Nations Peoples beyond the borders of
Canada and the United States. Papers (between 15 to 20 minutes) should
centre on questions relative to Aboriginal arts in general, and to the
characteristics of powwows and First Nations dance and theater companies in
particular, focusing on their esthetic aspects, and may draw connections to
their political and religious aspects as well. These may concern all areas
of human and social sciences (history, ethnology, political
science, musicology etc.). A unique aspect of this symposium is that
debates will take place in the presence of Aboriginal dance and theater
artists who, after having performed, will speak on their practices. The
symposium will take place over the course of two days: June first in
Amphitheatre 4 of the Theatre Department of Université Paris 8, and June
second in the studio room of the Théâtre de l’Epée de Bois of the
Cartoucherie de Vincennes. The acts of the symposium will then be published
in both English and French.

Proposals, of about twenty lines, should be submitted between now and
the 25th of March, 2012, and should include first and last name,
profession, address, an indicative bibliography, and any eventual technical
needs
(projector etc.).
