Dear colleagues,
I write to let you know about our Graduate Scholar-in-Residence program at
the Newberry, now poised to begin its second academic year. We started the
program last year to encourage PhD candidates in the humanities to conduct
research in our collections and become a part of our community of scholars.
We selected four graduate students for the pilot program in 2011-12, which
proved a great success.
We now invite graduate students who have advanced to PhD candidacy to apply
for this status for 2012-13. Preference will be given to candidates whose
dissertation projects are well advanced and who demonstrate a need for
Newberry collections in their dissertation projects. The students who are
selected will be provided with research carrels, access to the Newberry
during extended hours, and opportunities to present their work-in-progress
to the Newberry's scholarly community.
Would you kindly pass the attached application and informational letter
along to doctoral candidates who you think might be interested?
With thanks,
Diane Dillon

Dear Colleague:
Thank you for your interest in becoming a graduate scholar-in-residence at
the Newberry Library. The experience
of the Newberry's fellows, staff, and readers is much enhanced by the
contributions that scholars like you make to
our shared intellectual life each year.
In order to apply to become a graduate scholar-in-residence you must submit
a project description, which should be
no longer than 1000 words. It should describe your project, explain its
significance, describe the Newberry materials
to be consulted, and outline your plan of work. Your need for and intensive
use of the Newberry's collections will
be a crucial factor in our consideration of your application. Thus, please
take special care to be as specific as
possible about the Newberry materials you plan to consult. You may learn
more about the Newberry's collections
on our website (www.newberry.org), where you also may access our online
catalog.
In addition to your project description, please complete the attached
application form, and submit it along with an
up-to-date c.v of no more than 5 pages, and two letters of recommendation.
These materials will be reviewed by a
sub-committee of the Newberry's Academic Council. We expect that graduate
scholars will be "in residence" at the
Newberry at least 10 hours per week, which will enable them to make good use
of the collections and participate in
the Newberry's intellectual community. Graduate scholars-in-residence are
expected to participate in the fellows'
seminar, which meets bi-weekly on Monday afternoons during the academic
year, and to give one presentation at
the Newberry colloquium on a Wednesday afternoon. Like postdoctoral
scholars-in-residence, graduate scholars
should be willing to provide a small amount of service to the Newberry.
Unfortunately, the Newberry cannot offer
remuneration to scholars-in-residence, but we can offer some privileges,
including reserve space for paged materials
and the ability to read at the Newberry on Mondays, when we are closed to
the general public.
Please submit your application materials electronically to
research at newberry.org. The application is due May 8,
2012. We expect to notify applicants about their acceptance around Memorial
Day. We hope that the graduate
scholars-in-residence will begin their residencies on September 4, 2012, so
that they can join the new long-term
fellows in the fall orientation activities.
If you have any questions about this program, please do not hesitate to
contact me at dillond at newberry.org.
Sincerely,
Diane Dillon
