George Washington Symposium

1619: Virginia Before the Washingtons

Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington, Mount
Vernon, VA/USA

November 1-2, 2019

The George Washington Symposium, to be held at Mount Vernon on November 1-2,
2019, will focus on the founding of Virginia and the 400th anniversary of
both representative government and the arrival of enslaved Africans in the
colony. The Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George
Washington at Mount Vernon will host a two-day scholarly symposium which
will investigate a wide variety of topics associated with early Virginia,
including colonization, Native Americans, slavery, the early Washington
family, archaeology, and social and political history.  

 

For our Emerging Scholars' Panel, Mount Vernon invites graduate students as
well as professionals active in their fields for no more than five years to
propose a 20-minute presentation examining the early history of colonial
Virginia before approximately 1660. Submit a 250-word abstract along with a
CV by Monday, August 26, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. through the link:

Chosen speakers will be offered full symposium participation, travel, and
lodging.
