On November 1, 2019, the Center for Upper Peninsula Studies and the Beaumier
U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will be presenting the
18th annual Sonderegger Symposium. The Symposium is the largest and most
prestigious academic conference dedicated to the study of the Upper
Peninsula and the Upper Great Lakes region.
This year, the theme for the symposium will be, "Anishinaabek: East, South,
West, North." This title is in reference to the First Nations of this region
and the medicine wheel which represent not only the four directions, but
many facets of traditional life. This symposium will offer presentations,
round-table discussions and a keynote address. This interdisciplinary
symposium will focus on many aspects of Anishinaabek life, both past and
present, including traditions, faith, history, environment, foodways,
economics, governance and many other potential subjects.
The Beaumier Center is seeking a wide range of interdisciplinary proposals
dealing with the Anishinaabek people and the Upper Great Lakes region. Some
travel expenses will be provided for scholars accepted from outside of the
Upper Peninsula. Presentation should be 30-35 minutes in length, and allow
for 5-10 minutes for questions.
To make a proposal, please send the following to the address below:
1. Title for the proposal
2. An abstract of your presentation including information to be covered
and expected outcomes (maximum 500 words).
3. You most recent curriculum vitae.
